I can't work on a presentation because....

... I actually feel sick even thinking about it.

I just get memories of my other failed attempts at presentations.

For those wondering, public speaking is the biggest fear of my anxiety. Socialising makes me nervous and sweaty but thoughts of public speaking again makes me want to cry.

I'm afraid I might have a breakdown infront of the class

Any advice on how to get over it?

I feel your pain. I recently found out that I'll be having to give a presentation for one of my classes this upcoming semester. Just the thought of it makes me feel physically sick.

As for advice... well, it may be worth having a chat to your tutor/teacher about the presentation and explaining a little about your anxiety. They may be able to make an allowance for you to skip the presentation and perhaps make up for it with alternative work. If, however, youre going ahead with the presentation, I think that knowing your material inside out is the key, and so is practising reading out loud. And as hard as it is, try to keep your head up and to project your voice.

Remembering that most people destest having to do presentations, even many who appear otherwise incredibly confident and loud, also helps me a little. I've always thought that going first if possible is also the best option, because everyone else is too busy worrying about their own presentation to pay much attention to yours and it beats the nerves festering during the whole time that you're waiting for your turn. I don't really know what else to offer in the way of advice because I'm absolutely terrified of public speaking too.

Presentations are gifts from the devil, I could not despise them more.

I wish you the best of luck!

Made it thru public speaking by taking it online but still had real issues. Here's the deal, the more your practice your speech/delivery/presentation, the more your mind will want to say one word after the other. Practice it, practice it, practice it, practice it, practice it...yes, practice it over and over and over, then think about the words and the words only, then the more comfortable you get with which word comes next, practice it even more. I know it isn't an easy answer but that is how it works... I'd love to see it if that helps, you can present it to me if you want. Be nice if it were just us eh, but no, go practice!!!

Some good news I found though, is that the teacher doesn't want us to stand up and talk to the class if we don't want to. We're allowed to hide behind the computer and distract everyone with a power point. A relief I guess, but I'm still haunted by memories of other presentations I've failed at in the past
